The Shard, at 310m high (1,016 ft), is Europe’s first vertical town. Its 72 floors comprise a 26-floor office complex, six world-class restaurant, eateries and bars, a 19-floor five-star Shangri-La Hotel, 13 floors of exclusive residential apartments and the UK’s highest viewing gallery.
London Bridge Quarter were tasked with managing the property and the activities within it.
Following the final construction of The Shard the process of fitting the building out for use by the varied occupiers of the building started. Due to its location adjacent to one of the Capitals busiest transport interchange if a fire were to take place this could have a significant effect on the Capitals transport, people and other organisations in the area.
The final fire detection system had yet to be installed along with the final fire mitigation measures which benefit the building today.
Safety Advisors, with their vast knowledge of fire prevention during construction, from both an insurance perspective and from the HSE’s perspective, worked with London Bridge Quarter and the various fit out contractors. This involved regular inspections to ensure the fire risk was maintained to a low level throughout the fit out and upto completion and installation of the final fire protection measures.
Following this Safety Advisors undertook the final Fire Risk Assessment for the building on behalf of London Bridge Quarter. We also reviewed the Fire Management Plans of the tenants of the building.
