Workplace Fatalities in Great Britain: A Stark Reminder of the Importance of Safety

2024 HSE statistics show falls from heights are still the cause of most deaths.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released its annual report covering work-related fatalities in Great Britain for the period April 2024 to March 2025. The data reveals that 124 workers lost their lives in fatal incidents at work over the past year.

While this figure is a decrease from the 138 fatalities recorded in the previous year, it remains broadly in line with pre-pandemic levels, highlighting the persistent and ongoing risk to workers across many industries.

Leading Causes of Fatal Incidents

The HSE’s report shows that the three most common causes of fatal injuries were:

  • Falls from height – 35 deaths
  • Being struck by a moving object – 18 deaths
  • Being trapped by something collapsing or overturning – 17 deaths

These causes are tragically familiar and underscore the importance of proactive risk management, regular inspections, and competent safety planning—particularly in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and logistics.

What This Means for Employers

These figures serve as a powerful reminder that workplace safety cannot be an afterthought. Employers have a legal and moral duty to protect their workforce by identifying hazards, implementing control measures, and ensuring that workers are properly trained and supervised.

At Safety Advisors, we work with organisations of all sizes to help them stay compliant, reduce risks, and embed a strong safety culture. Whether it’s carrying out risk assessments, supporting site inspections, or delivering training, our role is to make sure your team gets home safely every day.

Let’s Make Sure You're Not a Statistic

Behind each of these numbers is a person—a life lost, a family devastated, a tragedy that might have been preventable. Our goal is to help you create a safer working environment and avoid becoming part of next year’s statistics.
